How To Make Your Own Homemade Shoe Polish

Ladies hold onto your heels because you are about to learn how much I dig a good DIY project! In fact, I may just try to write one every week, because I’m crazaaay like that.

So how am I gonna kick off this DIY’in madness? Well, with homemade shoe polish of course!

Sole sisters, we all know that scruffy-lookin’ shoes are absolutely not an option, so I did a little diggin’ and found a few quick and easy  recipes to help save you some dimes and look your finest!

And I’ll let you in on a little secret – it’s not only about the polish when you go to shine those shoes.

Make sure you remove any excess dirt or grime build up. You can use a stiff brush or hand towel, just be wary of what material you are working with. A stiff brush on leather shoes may cause more harm than good!

Once cleaned off there are several homemade shoe polish recipes.

A Little DIY TLC

On a budget? Use petroleum jelly – it’s shiny and fast. No muss no fuss.

Looking for something with a little more life to it? Mix olive oil (or walnut oil) with the juice from one lemon and rub the mixture onto your shoe. This is gentle enough that you can repeat the process every month or whenever you shoes look in need of some TLC.

From a dreary part of the world and looking for some waterproofing alternatives? Polish and protect with this 3 part recipe:

  • Remove the wick of a tea candle and melt it down
  • Mix in 1 tbsp. of lanolin and 1 tbsp of mineral oil
  • Once stirred together, rub it on your shoe with a rag and let stand for a minute or two.
  • Finish up by buffing your shoes so they sparkle and shine!

Seriously cash strapped? This one fruit is fast, effective and one of your simplest options – rub your shoes down with the inside of a banana peel.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking.

Shoes and bananas, the combo tends to bring up a comedic scenario of someone slipping and falling but really, the oils and potassium in the banana polish and preserve!

Not only do your shoes benefit from the banana but so do you, because you get to eat it! A DIY trick AND a snack? You’re welcome.

So there you have it ladies – easy, breezy homemade shoe polish recipes. From minimal coinage to downright dirt cheap, I’ve given you a few options to test out!
